How this site is built.

What this site is

CricketTaken is an independent cricket reference covering 673 player profiles, 15 IPL franchises across 19 seasons, and 1,243 matches of ball-by-ball data. It is run by a small team of cricket followers, not by a governing body or a broadcaster.

There is no login, no paywall and no personal account. The site is a set of static pages served from a content delivery network, which is why it loads quickly and why it costs almost nothing to keep online.

Where the numbers come from

International career statistics are derived from Cricsheet, an open archive of ball-by-ball data licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Our scripts read every delivery of every match and add up the runs, balls, dismissals and extras themselves.

That matters for two reasons. It means the numbers can be recomputed and checked by anyone with the same source, and it means nothing here is lifted from a commercial statistics provider whose database is their property.

IPL figures are computed the same way, from ball-by-ball records of every IPL match. Player photographs and biographical fields such as date of birth, batting style and bowling style come from a third-party sports data feed.

What we do not claim

Cricket data has gaps, and hiding them would be the easy thing to do. These are the ones that affect this site:

• Careers that began before 2001. The ball-by-ball archive starts in 2001 for Test cricket and 2002 for One Day Internationals. Players whose careers began earlier are only partly covered. Their pages label the shortfall and their figures are excluded from any leaderboard, so a fragment of a career is never presented as a career total.
• Afghanistan men’s cricket. Our international source withholds all matches involving the Afghanistan men’s team as a matter of its own policy. Those internationals therefore cannot be computed here, and the affected pages say so.
• Men’s and women’s cricket. The source archives hold both. Our pipeline separates them, so the two are never added together.
• Players without statistics. The player directory lists every cricketer in our source feed, but only those with a genuine statistical record get a profile page. We would rather have fewer pages than thousands of empty ones.

Editorial standards

Written articles are researched and edited by people, then checked against the data on this site before publication. Where an article describes a technique or a pattern rather than quoting a figure, that is deliberate: a number stated without a source is worse than no number at all.

If you find a mistake, it will be corrected. Statistics are recomputed from source rather than patched by hand, so a correction fixes every page the error touched.

Independence and funding

The site is funded by advertising. Advertisers have no say in editorial content, no access to the data pipelines and no influence over which players or teams are covered. No page on this site is sponsored, and there is no paid placement in any ranking or list.

Attribution

Statistics derived from Cricsheet are used under CC BY 4.0 and require attribution to Cricsheet, which is given on every page that uses them. Team names and competition names are the property of their respective owners and are used descriptively. No official logos, kit imagery or broadcast footage appears anywhere on this site.
