How Test, ODI and T20 cricket differ, format by format
How Test, ODI and T20 cricket differ in length, ball, fielding rules and tactics, and why a batter who dominates one format can struggle badly in another.

Cricket is the only major sport that plays three distinct versions of itself at the highest level, in the same season, frequently with overlapping squads. A Test match runs for five days and can still finish without a winner. A Twenty20 game is done inside an evening. The One Day International sits between them and borrows from both.
The Laws underneath all three are broadly the same. A bowler still delivers six balls an over, the stumps are the same height, lbw works the same way, and a catch is a catch. What changes is time. Almost everything else that separates the formats follows from that single variable, and the tactical differences that look arbitrary from the outside are nearly all downstream consequences of how many deliveries a side has, and how many wickets it can afford to lose while using them.
The shape of each match
Test cricket gives each side two innings and does not limit how long those innings may last. A minimum number of overs is scheduled per day, ninety in normal conditions, and play continues across five days until one side has taken twenty wickets or run out of time. Because an innings ends only when ten wickets fall or the batting captain closes it, a batter may occupy the crease for as long as skill and stamina allow, and a bowler may bowl as many overs as his captain and his body permit.
The ODI gives each side a single innings of fifty overs, and caps any one bowler at ten. The T20 gives each side twenty overs, and caps any one bowler at four. Ten wickets remain the maximum a team can lose in every format, which is the detail that quietly governs everything. Stretch ten wickets across the several hundred deliveries of a long Test innings and each wicket is precious. Compress those same ten wickets into a hundred and twenty deliveries and each one becomes cheap. Cheap wickets are the licence for risk, and risk is the engine of the short game.
Results work differently too. White-ball cricket can produce a tie, and can be shortened or decided on a revised target when the weather intervenes. Test cricket produces the draw, an outcome with no equivalent in the shorter formats, and the permanent possibility of it changes how every session is played. A side that cannot win can still refuse to lose, and the skill of refusing to lose is a genuine cricketing discipline that white-ball players are never asked to practise.

The ball, and the arc it creates
Test cricket is played with one ball per innings until the fielding side takes the option of a new one, which becomes available after a set number of overs. That single rule creates the entire narrative arc of a Test innings. The new ball is hard, its lacquer intact and its seam proud, and for a period it swings and seams. Then it softens. The shine survives on one side because the fielding side works to keep it there, and the other side roughens. Somewhere in the middle the ball does very little, and batting is at its easiest. Later, on a dry and abrasive square, the ball may reverse, and it becomes dangerous again in different hands and at a different angle. Meanwhile the surface wears, footmarks open up outside the left-hander's off stump and the right-hander's leg stump, and spin comes into the match.
One-day cricket has spent much of its life arguing with itself about the ball. For a long period a single white ball did the job, with a change permitted late in the innings because white leather discolours faster than red. Then two new balls were used, one from each end, which kept them hard and visible but effectively deleted both reverse swing and the genuinely soft-ball phase from the format. More recently the arrangement has moved back towards a single ball for the closing overs, an acknowledgement that the middle period had become too comfortable for batters and that death bowlers deserved something to hold on to. The specifics matter less than the principle. Whoever controls the condition of the ball controls the balance between bat and ball.
T20 only ever sees the first phase of a ball's life. Twenty overs is not long enough for leather to age into anything else, and the ball is often changed anyway if it goes out of shape or into a crowd. This is one of the underrated reasons the format tilts towards hitting. The bowler almost never receives the assistance that a properly old ball provides, and the batter almost never has to survive a spell in which the ball is doing something unpredictable off the seam.
Where the fielders are allowed to stand
In a Test match a captain may place his fielders almost anywhere. The Laws cap the number of fielders behind square on the leg side at two, a legacy of an old controversy about short-pitched bowling aimed at the body, and international conditions cap the total on the leg side. Beyond that, the field is the captain's to shape. He may post four slips, a gully and a short leg with nobody in front of the wicket at all, because his currency is wickets rather than runs.
White-ball cricket adds the fielding circle, an oval marked thirty yards from each middle stump, and then legislates how many fielders may stand outside it. In an ODI the restriction runs in three phases: hardest at the start, loosened in the middle, loosened again at the end. In a T20 it runs in two, tight for the opening overs and then constant for the rest. The full mechanics are covered in the powerplay rules explainer, but the effect is simple enough to state. A restriction on how many fielders may protect the boundary guarantees gaps, and guaranteed gaps make aggression rational.
That is the fundamental split. Test fields are built to take wickets and are only incidentally concerned with runs. T20 fields are built to concede as few runs as possible and take wickets largely as a by-product. ODI fields have to do both, which is why one-day captaincy is often the hardest of the three, and why the man reading the field is worth studying as closely as the man bowling. The follow-on and the declaration
Two of the most distinctive instruments in cricket exist only in the long form. The follow-on allows a side that has established a large enough first-innings lead to ask the opposition to bat again immediately rather than taking its own second innings. The margin required depends on the scheduled length of the match, and in a five-day game it is two hundred runs. The captain is not obliged to enforce it, and the decision is genuinely difficult. Enforcing it gives the bowlers no rest and gambles that the opposition will fold twice in succession. Declining it protects tired bowlers and lets the side bat the opposition out of the game, at the cost of surrendering overs.
The declaration is the other. A captain may close his own innings at any point, and the timing of it is one of the few places in sport where a side voluntarily stops scoring in order to create the chance of victory. Declare too early and the target is chaseable. Declare too late and there is not enough time to take ten wickets. The best declarations are calculations about the pitch, the weather forecast, the state of the ball and the temperament of the opposition, and they are made under the knowledge that a draw is always waiting as the punishment for timidity.
Neither instrument has any meaning in limited-overs cricket, where an innings ends when the overs run out and no captain would ever stop early. This is the clearest structural evidence that the long form is a different game rather than a longer version of the same one. The short formats ask how many runs you can make. The long form asks how you propose to take twenty wickets, and every other decision is subordinate to that question.
What each format actually rewards
In a Test match the batter's primary skill is not scoring. It is not getting out. The good Test innings begins with a period in which the batter concedes the contest, leaves everything outside off stump, plays as late as possible under his eyes, and accepts that the bowler is on top. Runs are collected once the ball has softened and the bowler has tired. Bowlers, correspondingly, are rewarded for accuracy sustained over long spells, for building pressure across an hour rather than an over, and for the ability to bowl a plan patiently until the batter breaks from it.
The ODI rewards a different discipline, which is pacing. The fifty-over innings has a natural shape: exploit the opening restriction, consolidate without stagnating while four fielders patrol the boundary, then accelerate hard at the end with wickets in hand. The great one-day batters are the ones who can rotate strike without risk during the long middle passage, because a single every ball is a high scoring rate achieved with almost no danger, and who can then change gear without changing technique.
The T20 rewards access. It is not enough to be able to hit the ball hard. The batter must be able to hit it hard into the areas the field cannot cover, which means having strokes for the wide yorker, the slower ball into the pitch, the ball at the body, and the ball outside off with a packed off side. That is why the ramp, the reverse sweep, the switch hit and the lofted drive over extra cover have become core skills rather than curiosities. A T20 batter with only orthodox strokes can be bowled to. A T20 batter who can score behind square on both sides cannot.
Why a great Test batter can look ordinary in a T20
The Test batter's virtue is his defence, and in T20 defence is nearly worthless. Every dot ball is a small defeat, because the resource being spent is deliveries rather than wickets. A batter trained over years to value his wicket above all else has to invert that instinct in a format where getting out with a decent strike rate is a better contribution than surviving with a poor one. That inversion is much harder than it sounds, because the habits involved are physical rather than intellectual.
There is also the matter of shot range. Test technique is built around playing the ball late, close to the body, with a straight bat and minimal risk. T20 hitting frequently demands the opposite: getting to the pitch early, hitting through the line, reaching for balls that the Test coaching manual says to leave, and premeditating against a bowler you have identified as the weak link. A player who has spent a career refusing to premeditate cannot simply switch it on.
Finally, there is time. In a Test the batter has as long as he needs to work out the conditions. In a T20 he may face fifteen deliveries in total, and the innings is effectively over before he has read the pace of the pitch. Players who need a start are structurally disadvantaged in a format that does not give starts. None of this makes them worse cricketers. It makes them cricketers optimised for a different problem.
Why a great T20 batter can look lost in a Test
The reverse failure is just as common and rather more brutal. The T20 specialist arrives in the long form to find that the bowler is not obliged to give him anything at all. There is no field restriction forcing gaps, no over limit forcing the best bowler out of the attack, and no scoreboard pressure forcing the captain to attack. A fielding side can bowl six inches outside off stump to a seven-two field for an hour and simply wait.
Against that, the skill required is leaving the ball, which is a genuine technique and not merely an absence of one. It requires judgement of line, a still head, and the discipline to do nothing repeatedly while the crowd grows restless. The T20 player who has trained himself to find scoring options in every delivery has no answer to a bowler offering none, and he tends either to reach for a ball he should ignore or to become becalmed and then reach for one anyway.
Then there is the second and third spell. In white-ball cricket the bowler goes away. In a Test he comes back, having watched a replay, having identified that the batter's front foot goes across, and having agreed a plan with his captain. Surviving the same high-class bowler four times in a day, with a new ball waiting at the end of it, is a test of concentration that the short formats never set.
Bowlers make the same trade
The pattern repeats on the other side of the contest. The Test bowler's job is to build pressure and take wickets, and his measure is the average. He can afford to be hit for four if the plan that conceded it also produces the edge two overs later. He needs stamina, repeatable action, subtle variation of seam position and length rather than obvious changes of pace, and the willingness to bowl a maiden that leads nowhere except to the next maiden.
The T20 bowler's measure is the economy rate, and his skills are almost a different trade. He needs the yorker on demand, ideally wide of off stump and into the blockhole, the slower ball that does not announce itself, the bouncer used as a surprise rather than an attritional weapon, and above all the ability to execute under a strike that has already begun. Four overs is not enough to set anybody up. Every ball is its own contest, and a bowler who can only be effective across a spell has nothing to offer.
The ODI bowler has to do a version of both. He must attack with the new ball while two fielders are out, hold an end through the middle while looking for the wicket that stalls the innings, and then bowl at the death against a set batter with a licence. It is not a coincidence that the most valuable one-day bowlers are usually those who can bowl in all three phases, since they free the captain to save specialists for the moments that require them.
The captain's job changes shape
Test captaincy is a long game of pressure management. The captain chooses when to attack with a close catcher, when to accept a spread field to rest a bowler, when to take the new ball, whether to enforce the follow-on and when to declare. He is managing four or five bowlers across five days with no over limits and a weather forecast in his pocket.
Limited-overs captaincy is closer to real-time resource allocation. Overs are a currency with a fixed supply, and the captain is constantly deciding who bowls them and against whom. Matchups matter enormously, because a left-arm spinner held back for a specific right-hander is a plan that only exists because bowlers have quotas. The over-rate clock is a live constraint as well, and in white-ball internationals a slow over rate can cost the fielding side a man outside the circle for the remaining overs, which turns an administrative failing into a tactical one.
How the formats have leaked into one another
The most visible flow has been from the short game upwards. Test scoring rates have risen, and sides that once batted through a fifth morning to be safe now look to force a result. Strokes invented for T20 have migrated into the longer formats, so that the reverse sweep against spin is now a standard defensive-to-attacking option in a Test rather than an act of provocation, and the ramp over the slips is played against genuine pace by batters who would once have been dropped for attempting it. Fielding standards have risen everywhere, because T20 made boundary saving and direct hits into match-deciding acts and because the fitness required to field in the short game raised the floor for everybody.
Wrist spin came back partly because of T20. In a format where the batter must attack, a bowler who turns the ball both ways and offers no rhythm is an asset even if he concedes the occasional over, and the wicket-taking premium outweighed the control premium for the first time in a generation. The traffic has not been one way. T20 has increasingly rediscovered virtues from the long form. Sides now talk about batting depth and building an innings rather than simply hitting from the first ball, because the maths of a twenty-over chase rewards a set batter at the end more than an extra six at the start. The best death bowlers are frequently those with red-ball skills, because a hard length bowled with a scrambled seam and a hidden slower ball is a Test bowler's craft applied to a short-form problem. What travels between formats
The skills that cross most reliably are the ones underneath technique rather than on top of it. A good defensive base travels, because it is what allows a batter to survive the passages where hitting is not on. The ability to hit straight travels, because the ground is longest down the ground in every format and the straight bat is the safest way to clear it. Genuine pace travels. So does the ability to spin the ball hard, since a bowler who imparts real revolutions gets drift and dip in a T20 and turn in a Test.
What does not travel is anything built on the assumption of a particular tempo. A batter whose game depends on a long start will struggle in twenty overs, and a batter whose game depends on the field being restricted will struggle when it is not. The players who succeed across all three, and they are rarer than the fixture lists suggest, tend to share a single quality. They have a method that works when the ball is moving and a set of options that work when it is not, and they can tell, quickly, which situation they are in.
