Career
Rahul Dravid built his career on the parts of batting that do not photograph well: leaving the ball, playing late, occupying the crease for sessions at a time. He faced more deliveries than any other batter in Test history, a statistic that describes his value more precisely than any average.
He was at his most important away from home. Dravid scored heavily in England, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the West Indies during an era when Indian batting abroad was fragile, and he was a central figure in several of the partnerships that produced India's most significant overseas results, including the 2001 Kolkata Test against Australia.
He also kept wicket in ODIs to allow India to play an extra batter, captained the side, and later coached India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title after a period developing the country's junior and A-team structures.
