Career
Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut at sixteen against a Pakistan attack containing Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan, and played international cricket for twenty-four years. No batter has scored more runs or made more centuries in either Test or One Day International cricket.
Technically he was close to orthodox — a compact, balanced base and a very still head — but he carried an unusually wide range of scoring options for a player of that discipline, from the straight drive to the paddle sweep and the upper cut over the slips. He adapted his method repeatedly across a career that spanned uncovered-era swing bowling, the rise of reverse swing and the arrival of T20.
His importance to Indian cricket extended well beyond output. For most of the 1990s the batting order was built around him almost exclusively, and his form was treated as a national event. He retired in 2013 after his 200th Test match, having won the World Cup with India in 2011.
