Cricket pitch types explained: green tops to dust bowls
How pitches are prepared and why they behave differently: grass cover, moisture, soil, cracks, five-day wear, and what a captain reads at the toss.

No other major sport lets the home side build the playing surface. A football pitch in Manchester behaves like a football pitch in Montevideo. A cricket pitch is twenty-two yards of prepared soil whose behaviour depends on what it is made of, how much water is in it, how hard it has been rolled, how much grass has been left on it and how many days of sun it has had. Two surfaces at the same ground, cut a fortnight apart, can play like different games.
Understanding a pitch is not a mystical skill. It comes down to four variables: soil, moisture, grass and compaction. Everything a commentator says about a surface is a consequence of those four.
What a pitch is made of
A cricket square is built from soil chosen for its clay content. Clay is what binds. When a clay-rich soil is watered and rolled, the particles pack together into a dense, hard block that stays intact under the impact of a cricket ball. That hardness is what produces pace and bounce.
Soils with a high clay content, of the kind traditionally used for Australian squares, bind into a very hard surface that gives steep, consistent bounce and takes a long time to break up. Soils with less clay do not bind as tightly. They produce lower bounce, they wear sooner and they crumble at the surface rather than cracking cleanly.
Indian squares vary enormously between regions because the soils do. Black cotton soils hold moisture, swell when wet and shrink and crack dramatically when they dry, which is why some Indian surfaces produce wide, deep cracks by the third day. Red soils bind less water, tend to be firmer underfoot and produce truer bounce with less dramatic cracking. Grounds in the same country can therefore play in almost opposite ways, which is one reason home advantage in cricket is a more complicated idea than it looks.
The other thing to know is that a square is not one pitch. It is a strip of ground with a dozen or more pitches side by side, prepared and rested in rotation. A pitch that has been used recently and re-rolled will not behave like one that has had a full season's rest, even at the same venue.
Moisture: the variable that changes hour by hour
Everything a groundsman does is really about managing water.
Water below the surface keeps the soil bound and elastic. A pitch with good subsurface moisture stays hard, carries pace and gives even bounce. As that moisture leaves over the days of a match, the soil contracts, loses its binding, and the top layer begins to break into loose particles. That is the deterioration a captain is thinking about when deciding whether to bat first.
Water at the surface is a different thing entirely and it is what produces seam movement. A ball landing on a slightly damp surface grips for an instant instead of skidding, and the seam deflects it. This is why the first session of a Test in seaming conditions is often the hardest to bat in, and why the same pitch is comfortable by the afternoon: the surface moisture has burnt off while the moisture underneath remains.
Too much water and the pitch is slow and tacky. The ball sits in the surface, comes on to the bat at half pace, and strokeplay becomes hard work without ever being dangerous. Too little and the surface is dry and unbound from the start, which is where the dust bowl comes from.
A groundsman controls this with watering, covers and the timing of the final cut and roll. In much of the world the challenge is to keep water in. In parts of England and New Zealand the challenge is to get it out.
Grass: what the covering actually does
Grass on a pitch does three jobs. It holds the surface together, it holds moisture in, and it gives the ball something to grip on.
A pitch with live grass, green and rooted, is a seamer's surface. The ball lands on the grass rather than the soil, deviates, and carries through at pace because the surface underneath is still firm. Bounce is usually true because the covering is even. This is the green top, and it is worth being careful with the term: a well-grassed pitch is often a very good batting surface once the ball is soft and the top has dried, because the grass has protected the soil from breaking up. Green does not automatically mean unplayable. It means the first two hours are a proper examination.
A pitch shaved close, with only the dead roots binding the surface, is where the ball starts to grip and turn. Take the covering off entirely, dry the top layer out and leave it unbound, and it will start to break up almost immediately. Ball marks appear on the first morning, the surface powders, and a finger spinner has purchase from the opening session. This is the dust bowl. It is not a mistake, it is a choice, and it usually reflects a home side that would rather take twenty wickets quickly than accumulate a large first-innings total.
Between those two extremes sits the majority of cricket: a light, even covering that offers a little early, flattens out for a day and a half, then breaks down.
Rolling and compaction
The heavy roller compresses the soil, closes the surface, temporarily binds cracks and makes the pitch play truer and faster. It is the batting side's tool, and the option to take a roller before an innings is used deliberately: a side batting last on a broken surface will almost always take the heaviest roller available, hoping to press the loose top back down for a session.
The effect is temporary. Rolling a dry, cracked pitch smooths the surface but does nothing about the loss of binding below it, and the cracks reopen as soon as play begins. Rolling can also accelerate deterioration on an already fragile surface by pulverising the top layer further.
The light roller is used to tidy a surface without driving moisture out, and the pre-match preparation of a pitch is essentially a sequence of watering, rolling and drying decisions timed to leave exactly as much moisture in the profile as the groundsman intends there to be on the first morning.
Cracks, footmarks and rough
Cracks form when the soil dries and contracts. On some surfaces they appear as a fine crazing, on others as deep, wide fissures that a ball can disappear into.
Cracks matter for two reasons. A ball that pitches on the edge of a crack behaves unpredictably, because part of the ball is meeting hard soil and part is meeting a void, so it can shoot low, sit up or dart sideways. And cracks are where the surface starts to lift. As the edges of a crack break away, small loose plates of soil form, and a ball landing on one of those does something different from a ball landing beside it.
Footmarks are separate. They are the areas outside the return crease and just short of a good length where the bowlers' front feet land, and they are dug out by studs rather than dried out by the sun. They give a spinner a patch of genuinely loose, torn-up surface to aim at. A left-arm spinner bowling to a right-hander into the footmarks created by right-arm-over bowlers has one of the great structural advantages in the game, and it is entirely a product of where the previous three days' bowlers happened to run.
The rough is the general term for that damaged area. Batters play differently to a ball pitching in the rough, using the pad more, sweeping more and looking to score before the surface makes normal defence unreliable.
How a pitch changes over five days
The pattern is broadly consistent, even though the pace of it varies enormously.

Two things distort that pattern. Rain resets surface moisture and can make a third-day pitch behave like a first-morning one for an hour. And heat accelerates everything, so a hot, dry week can produce day-four behaviour by the second afternoon.
The practical consequence is the fourth-innings chase. Batting last on a deteriorating surface means facing the ball that keeps low and the ball that spits, in the same over, from the same length. That is why sides bat first on surfaces expected to break up, and why the phrase "worth 350 in the first innings and 200 in the fourth" gets used so often.
Two-paced, and other awkward surfaces
A two-paced pitch is one where consecutive deliveries of the same length come through at different speeds. Some sit up and stop, some skid on. It is the most difficult condition to bat in and the least dramatic to watch, because nothing looks wrong until somebody spoons a pull shot to mid-on.
It has several causes. A surface with patchy grass gives a different response depending on whether the ball lands on soil or on a tuft. A dry crust over damp soil skids when the crust holds and grips when it breaks. A worn pitch with plates of loose material behaves one way on the plate and another beside it. And a low-clay surface that is losing its binding simply absorbs more of the ball's energy in some places than others.

- Slow low. Little pace off the surface and bounce below stump height. Cutting and pulling become risky, and full straight bowling is hard to get away.
- Sticky. A drying wet surface. Rare in the covered era but historically the most difficult batting condition in the game.
- Tennis-ball bounce. Soft surface, steep bounce, little pace. Uncomfortable rather than dangerous.
- Under-prepared. Insufficient rolling and drying time, usually producing early seam movement and early turn together.
Drop-in pitches
Drop-in pitches are grown in trays away from the ground, then lifted into place, most often at stadiums shared with football, rugby or Australian rules, where a permanent square would be in the way for most of the year.
They behave differently for a structural reason: the tray creates a boundary between the pitch profile and the ground below it. Water moves differently, temperature moves differently, and the roots have a fixed depth to work with. The general reputation is for even bounce and true early behaviour, with less pronounced deterioration than a native square of the same soil, because the profile is more uniform and better controlled. Some have been criticised for producing surfaces so consistent that neither seam nor spin gets much assistance, which turns matches into contests of patience.
The technology has improved considerably and the older assumption that a drop-in is automatically a lifeless surface no longer holds. Judge each venue individually rather than the category.
How a captain reads a surface
At the toss, a captain is gathering evidence, not performing a ritual. The checks are mostly physical.
- Colour. Green suggests live grass and moisture. Brown suggests dryness. A grey, dusty top suggests the surface is already unbound.
- Hardness. Pressing a thumb, a key or a stud into the surface tells you whether it is firm or gives. A surface that marks easily will break up early.
- Grass, live or dead. Rub it. Live grass is springy and green at the base and will help the seamers. Dead, rolled-in grass is brown at the root and only binds the surface.
- Moisture at the surface. A dark patch, a damp feel, or dew still sitting on the square points to early movement that will not last.
- Cracks. Their width, depth and pattern. Wide cracks on day one mean serious deterioration by day four.
- The edges of the square. How the pitch is bound at the margins gives a clue to how well the whole strip has knitted together.
- The outfield. Dry, bare, abrasive outfields wear the ball quickly and bring reverse swing into play, which is covered in more detail in how reverse swing works.
- The forecast. Cloud cover assists swing. Heat accelerates deterioration. In day-night matches, dew arriving in the second innings makes the ball wet and the surface skiddy, which usually favours the chasing side and is the single biggest reason captains bowl first under lights.
Then comes the judgement, and it is a judgement about time rather than about today. Batting first is a bet that the surface gets worse. Bowling first is a bet that the help available in the first two hours is worth more than the difficulty of batting last. In limited-overs cricket, the calculation shifts to dew, boundary size and what a chasing side knows that a setting side does not.
The last piece of the read is the composition of the two attacks. A surface offering turn from the second day is only an advantage if you have picked the bowlers to exploit it, which is why the toss decision and the playing XI are made together, not in sequence.
Ratings and the limits of the argument
International pitches are rated by the match referee on a scale running from very good down through good, satisfactory and unsatisfactory to unfit. Poor ratings carry demerit points that accumulate against a venue over a rolling period, and a venue that collects enough of them can be suspended from hosting.
The system exists to catch genuinely dangerous surfaces, the ones with unpredictable bounce that threaten a batter's safety, and surfaces so lifeless that they make a result impossible. It was never designed to enforce neutrality, and the recurring argument about whether a home side has gone too far usually confuses the two. A pitch that turns from the first ball is not unsafe. It is a home advantage, exercised in the same way that a green seamer in early season is a home advantage, and the fair complaint is not that either exists but that the game is inconsistent about which one it complains about.
